Arsenal – Aston Villa: 0-2
Well, last week I pointed out that Arsenal's victory over Manchester United wasn't an indication of whether they were back on track or not, and it turns out I was right. Once again, they came out with an insipid performance against Aston Villa who mercilessly exploited the Gunners' defensive woes. In fact, if it wasn't for Villa's lack of finishing, the score would have been much much worse. There is a state of panic that comes over Arsenal's defense every time the ball enters the box. It's like they don't really know what to do if the ball doesn't come straight at them. Forget the defensive midfielder, get a solid center defender to get the job done. In the middle, I'm getting the sense that Fabregas is getting tired. The guy plays every minute of every game. He should be given a rest every once in a while. You might tell me Frank Lampard does the same over at Chelsea, but there isn't a player of Mikel's caliber backing Fabregas so he still has some extra work to do. All in all, good work by Aston Villa who never let up on the pressure.

Arsenal's line-up: Manuel Almunia; Bacary Sagna (Kolo Toure, 70th), William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre, Gael Clichy; Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas, Denilson, Samir Nasri; Abou Diaby (Emmanuel Adebayor, 61st), Nicklas Bendtner (Carlos Vela, 67th).

Manchester United – Stoke City: 5-0
Cristiano Ronaldo came up with another double this week scoring twice on free-kicks (3rd and 88th minute) with both goals bookending a dominant performance by the Red Devils. Although United opened the scoring early, it took a while for them to find their groove as the passing was a bit off. They managed to score a second goal right before halftime – a mentally damaging blow to Stoke City who could still hope for a chance it was 1-0 at the break. The home side made it clear that they weren't let this one get away when Berbatov added a third goal a couple of minutes after the break (48th minute) thanks to horrible defending by his marker. Leading 3-0, Sir Alex Ferguson took the opportunity to introduce some youngsters to Premier League action, putting in Darron Gibson, Manucho, and Danny Welbeck. The latter scored a superb goal at the 83rd minute from way out of the box that left no chance to the goalkeeper. Welbeck and Manucho both looked good on the limited time they played, which is great news for United fans. As for Stoke, well they didn't stand a chance really. Just let the storm pass through and carry on.

Manchester United's line-up: Edwin Van der Sar; John O'Shea, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra; Park Ji-Sung (Danny Welbeck, 62nd), Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher (Darron Gibson, 62nd), Cristiano Ronaldo; Carlos Tevez (Manucho, 74th), Dimitar Berbatov.

2008-2009 Serie A Wrap-Up (Week 1-10)

November 15th 2008 02:18
Summer talk in Italy has been monopolized by the two Milan teams with AC Milan picking up a disgraced Ronaldinho from Barcelona while Inter put ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho under contract. Here's how the teams stack up after ten weeks.

1. AC Milan (10-7-1-2 | 22pts)
After a rough start which saw them lose out against bottom-tiered Bologna (1-2) and Reggina (0-2), the Rossoneri rebounded in their third week with a convincing 4-1 win against Lazio. They have gone undefeated since, their only blemish being a 0-0 draw against Cagliari. And to think, they've done all this without Pirlo is pretty amazing. The arrival of Ronaldinho has paid off so far. The Brazilian midfielder is the leading scorer of his team with four goals to his name. He was also the lone scorer in the Milan Derby, providing a 1-0 win to Milan. It took a while for him and Kaka to get in sync since Kaka was injured for the first few games, but ever since he's been back, Ka-Pa-Ro has been firing on all cylinders.

The only problem that I'm seeing with Milan right now is their slow defense. I will never deny the fact that Maldini is a legend but I don't he'll go past this season. He and Kaladze look like turtles against speedy forwards. In defensive midfield, Flamini hasn't been brilliant but he's done well enough to have eight appearances in Serie A so far.

2. Udinese (10-6-3-1 | 21pts)
It's surprising to see Udinese so far up in the standings. Surprisingly, their only loss came against Juventus and the 1-0 scoreline suggests that it could have gone either way. Their 3-1 win against Roma is probably their biggest achievement so far since they haven't met any big teams just yet (excluding Juventus and Roma).

3. Inter Milan (10-6-3-1 | 21pts)
Like Udinese, Mourinho's men have only one loss so far (0-1 against Milan), but they'll curse themselves for the number of draws they got against weaker teams, namely Sampdoria (1-1), Genoa (0-0), and Fiorentina (also 0-0). Like with his old club, Chelsea, Josι Mourinho started the season by putting his team in a 4-5-1 formation with newcomers Mancini and Quaresma acting as wingers. Lately though, he has shown the ability to shift his team to a 4-4-2 with either Adriano, Bolatelli, or Crespo acting as Ibrahimovic's partner. Inter players don't look quite comfortabe with the new tactics yet, if they are, they seem to have a lot of trouble with the final ball. They should fix those weaknesses if they want to move up.

4. Napoli (10-6-2-2 | 20pts)
The season is still young but Napoli has gone off to a good start by surprising a couple of teams – defeating both Juventus (2-1), and Lazio (1-0). However, their three-game winning streak was ended when Milan defeated them 1-0 in the 10th week.

5. Lazio (10-6-1-3 | 19pts)
The problem with Lazio right now is consistency. They started the season with two wins, conceding only one goal in that period before getting crushed 4-1 by Milan in the third week. They continued with other wins, again conceding only one goal, then suffered a draw against Lecce, and lost two more games after that. It seems like every time they concede more than one goal, they're not able to rise up to the challenge.

6. Juventus (10-5-3-2 | 18pts)
Led by the eternals Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedved, The Old Lady is keeping pace with both the Serie A and the Champions League. They started the season with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Fiorentina before rolling on with two consecutive wins against Udinese (1-0) and Cagliari (1-0). The next four weeks weren't too good as they picked up only two points, getting two draws and two losses which forced them out of the top ten. They climbed back up with a three-game winning streak in which Del Piero got one goal and Neved got two. The feel-good story out of Juventus isn't only the return of Del Piero as a match-changing player, but also his partnership with newcomer Amauri who has five goals in ten appearances so far this season. His tall, hulking presence in the box is an easy target for Nedved's cross while Del Piero offers him great support by simply hovering about.

7. Genoa (10-5-2-3 | 17pts)
The Red-Blues started a commotion early in the season when they defeated AC Milan 2-0 in the second week. They also surprised AS Roma (won 3-1), and Inter Milan (drew 0-0). They never lost two games in a row so far which definitely makes them a team to watch.

8. Fiorentina (10-5-2-3 | 17pts)
Like I said before, Fiorentina surprised Juventus in the first week of the season when Gilardino scored a late-equalizer to make it 1-1. They didn't do too well after that, losing two of their next three games, but they found their form back with a four-game winning streak. A 1-0 loss against Siena in the tenth week of the season won't go down too well with manager Prandelli.

9. Palermo (10-5-1-4 | 16pts)
Palermo is another team that managed to surprise Juventus, winning their confrontation 2-1. They also defeated Roma 3-1.

10. Catania (10-4-3-3 | 15pts)
Drew 1-1 against Juventus in the fourth week. They haven't been able to perform consistently, finishing the first ten weeks on a two-game losing streak.

11. Atalanta (10-4-2-4 | 14pts)
They started the season well with two consecutive wins, but it's all gone to waste as they found themselves picking five points in their last five games (one win, two draws, two losses).

12. Siena (10-3-3-4 | 12pts)
There's really nothing to say about a team that got only three wins in the span of ten games.

13. Lecce (10-2-5-3 | 11pts)
Lecce is hanging on by getting draw after draw after draw. They need to learn how to win a couple.

14. Cagliari (10-3-1-6 | 10pts)
Cagliari started the season atrociously with five straight losses. A 0-0 draw against Milan in the sixth week seems to have rejuvenated the team which lost only one game from then on.

15. Sampdoria (9-2-4-3 | 10pts)
Sampdoria have a lot of trouble filling up the net as their biggest win so far is 2-0 against Bologna.

16. Torino (10-2-2-6 | 8pts)

17. Roma (9-2-1-6 | 7pts)
For Roma, the saying is usually “where Totti goes, Roma follows.” However, the loss of Mancini during the summer seems to have been fatal to this team as their attacking options are now pretty limited.

18. Bologna (10-2-0-8 | 6pts)
After defeating AC Milan in the first week, it's been a downhill slide for Bologna who have only two wins so far.

19. Chievo (10-1-3-6 | 6pts)

20. Reggina (10-1-2-7 | 5pts)

Real Madrid – Malaga: 4-3
In a match plagued by poor refereeing (for both sides, I might add), it was the defending champions who came out on top thanks to Gonzalo Higuain's brilliant performance. Once again, their opponents took advantage of Madrid's weakness on the left side to open the score five minutes into the game. Winger Eliseu easily got past both Marcelo and Heinze before delivering a low cross into the box, but the ball surprisingly came back to him as Baha's strike hit both Sergio Ramos and the post. With Iker Casillas out of position, Eliseu only had to push the ball into the wide open net. Two minutes later, Marcelo repaired his defensive lapse by making a penetrating run in Malaga's box. His shot was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Higuain didn't miss the rebound to put the score at 1-1. Madrid had most of the possession for the next ten minutes, repeatedly testing Malaga's goalkeeper who gave several huge rebounds. At the 17th minute, Malaga took the lead once again thanks to poor marking by Madrid. At the 36th minute, the home side was rewarded a penalty which was easily converted by Higuain. Tied at 2-2, the Meringues would lose a big piece of their team before half-time when Sergio Ramos was sent off for stepping on an opposing player's chest.

The second half was a bit more subdued as the visitors started to get a bit more possession of the ball while Madrid players only watched them play. Consequently, Malaga took the lead for the third time of the night at the 69th minute via penalty. They didn't have much time to celebrate though because one minute later, Higuain completed his hat-trick with a superb shot at the edge of the box. Finally, the Argentine striker scored the winning goal at the 77th minute on another penalty. It was a rough night for the Madridistas, but they came up with the three points, and that's all that matters.

Real Madrid's line-up: Iker Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Fabio Cannavaro, Gabriel Heinze, Marcelo; Wesley Sneijder (Michele Salgado, h-t), Fernando Gago, Guti, Royston Drenthe (Javier Saviola, 72nd), Rafael Van der Vaart (Mahamadou Diarra, 82th); Gonzalo Higuain.

Barcelona – Valladolid: 6-0
The goal festival continued with Barcelona's confrontation against Valladolid. Samuel Eto'o kept up with his hot streak, scoring four consecutive goals in the first half, all results of great passing by the Blaugrana. Despite a more active approach by Valladolid in the second half, they couldn't hold up to Barca's powerful attacks. Both Gudjohnsen and Henry scored, putting the score at 6-0. Meanwhile, the visitors were getting more and more frustrated with Messi's impeccable play which led to almost every Barcelona goal. They repeatedly tackled him, pushed him to the ground, but the Argentine winger kept on going, taking on Xavi's role of architect. It's no wonder the Spanish midfielder was almost invisible on that night with only a couple of great passes here and there.

Barcelona's line-up: Victor Valdes; Daniel Alves, Rafael Marquez (Martin Caceres, 67th), Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol; Xavi Hernandez, Yaya Toure, Eidur Gudjohnsen (Seydou Keita, 71st); Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o (Aleksandr Hleb, 74th), Thierry Henry.

Arsenal – Manchester United: 2-1
Sir Alex Ferguson has to be cursing his team's missed opportunities after Saturday's match against the struggling Gunners. Twice now Manchester United has allowed their opponents to stay in the game simply because they couldn't capitalize on their opportunities. The Red Devils got two clear scoring chances in the first twenty minutes of game including a disallowed goal on which Berbatov was ruled offside (again!), and a missed shot by Rooney who had scored on a similar play on month ago. Consequently, Arsenal were the first to score when Samir Nasri fired a rocket past Van der Sar. The Gunners still weren't safe after that goal as United repeatedly assaulted Almunia's net without any success.

2008-2009 EPL Wrap-Up (Week 1-10)

November 7th 2008 01:05
*Warning, huge post follows*

Before the beginning of the season, many people predicted that Manchester United would easily dominate their Premiership rivals. After ten games played, here's how the teams stack up

For the second straight week, the defending champions were receiving one of the Premiership's weakest teams, recently-promoted Hull City. The latter were easily defeated by Chelsea the week before with a scoreline of 3-0. Conventional wisdom would say that Manchester United were going to duplicate that performance with a convincing win of their win. For awhile, it actually looked like it.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the second minute of play with a low shot that hit the post before crossing the line. Twenty minutes later though, Hull took advantage of a careless and unnecesserary foul by Vidic, to level the score at 1-1. Still, Manchester United were completely dominating the game as evidenced by two more goals before half-time respectively scored by Carrick and Ronaldo (his second of the day

For the first time this season (I think), Rooney started the game as a substitute in order to give Carlos Tevez some playing time. United didn't miss a beat as their first scoring chance came at the first minute when Berbatov's shot was blocked by a defender. Cristiano Ronaldo was the only one to find the net two times in the first half, his first coming at the 13th minute when fired Nani's low cross past Green and his second at the 29th minute after a superb piece of skill by Berbatov. For once in this season, Nani had a strong game on the left flank. But maybe it was because the Hammers' had serious trouble with their marking on the right side. Both goals originated from there.

In defense, the Red Devils were solid. They had no choice, really, what with Kuszczak in goal and all. I love the new kid Rafael, I really do, but he didn't have a great defensive game on Wednesday. He was a bit too hasty in his tackles and it often led to odd men rushes on United's right-flank. Offensively, I thought he tried to go to often for the cross. Cutting inside the box for a low cross would've kept West Ham on their toes a bit more. As it was, all the visitors had to do was wait for the cross and clear it with a header

Barcelona – Almeria: 5-0
Two weeks after thrashing Atletico Madrid 6-1, the Blaugrana put on another show on Saturday, defeating Almeria 5-0. This time around, Eto'o managed to complete the hat-trick (he was limited to a double on two occasions), and Dani Alves finally put one of his fiery rockets past the opposing goalkeeper. But like the game against Atletico, Barcelona put their feet off the gas pedal after the first 45 minutes where all five goals were scored. The good news is that Henry has now three goals in six appearances, creating a nice problem for Guardiola. I'd still go with Eto'o but knowing you have another potent striker on the bench is a good thing for any coach. For once in a long while, Barcelona is actually looking like a team rather than a bunch of individuals.

Manchester United – Everton: 1-1
When Darren Fletcher scored his third of the season at the 21st minute, it looked like the Red Devils would get an easy win. Unfortunately, their domination only lasted in the first 45 minutes. In the second half, Everton's pressure became almost unbearable for Sir Alex Ferguson's men. It didn't help that Ferdinand had a couple of brain farts that put his team and Van der Sar in serious trouble. Everton tied the game at the 62nd minute, but they could've had easily grabbed the lead if their strikers were more precise.

Chelsea – Middlesbrough: 5-0
Who can stop Scolari's men? Chelsea are simply bulldozing their way through the Premiership without much opposition. Against Middlesbrough, the Blues had all the time and space in the world to dictate the pace of the game. The first half ended with the score 1-0, the goal coming from Kalou. After that though, Chelsea ran a football clinic for their visitors who were overwhelmed by the home side's superiority. To play illustrates this dominance other than Belletti's goal at the 52nd minute. The versatile player received a pass a good distance away from Boro's goal, but the time and space given to him by the opposing defenders allowed to calmly control the ball and deliver a rocket of a shot that went top-corner. Two minutes later, Kalou would score his second, putting the game beyond doubt.

While their rival, Barcelona, displayed an electrifying performance on Saturday, Madrid could only settle for a point on Sunday as their offense suffered several misfires. All four goals were scored in the first half, and although Madrid dominated the game in terms of possession, they couldn't find the winning goal that could've put them in third place.

The first goal was scored by Tamudo on a penalty-kick at the 19th minute after Heinze tackled the striker inside the box. I've said it before, and I'll say it again – Heinze should retire once and for all. He is too slow for the pace of the game, and commits too many mistakes. Five minutes later, Raul equalized on a header, showing that he still has the nose for goal. Espanyol would score once more at the 30th minute, but Raul would cancel it with his second right before half-time

Fans on both sides of the fence were gleeful with anticipation for this encounter in the sixth week of the Spanish season. Indeed, one point was separating the two teams in the standings, and a confrontation between Messi and Aguero – two world-class Argentine strikers – was not to be taken lightly. However, all those expectations went away when the match became one-way traffic with Barca attacking, and Atletico doing their best to hold on.

What is there to say about a game which had a 5-1 scoreline before half an hour of play? Barca struck fast in the first five minutes, scoring on a corner-kick at the third minute via Marquez's header, and a penalty kick awarded to them when a defender's hip came into contact with Messi. The two goals completely broke Atletico's resolve, and the third goal – scored by Messi on a free-kick while Coupet was busy setting up his wall – was downright humiliating. Two minutes later, Maxi Rodriguez gave some to his teammates by reducing the score to 3-1, but when the captain went down with an injury a couple of minutes later, you just knew that it was game over for Atletico. Eto'o, Gudjohnsen, and Henry scored the other goals for the Blaugrana – all of them were the results of superb passing by the home side who were simply on fire

Sunderland – Arsenal: 1-1
The Gunners must be giving headaches to their fans. Although Wenger's men play an attractive kind of football (they are probably the best passing team of the Premiership), they still haven't displayed the kind of character that is required to become champions. Consistency is the key here. They completely schooled FC Porto in their Champions League encounter, yet they've had trouble finishing smaller clubs so far in the Premiership, with Sunderland being the latest to give them a run for their money.
