Barcelona Barca Champions League Blaugrana
In the days preceding the big Champions League final opposing English champions Manchester United to Spanish champions Barcelona, much ink was spread on the two teams' strengths and weaknesses, mainly on how Barcelona would cope with a weakened defense. But after Barcelona's impressive display on Wednesday, you have wonder how everyone had seemingly forgotten about Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, the two main components of Barca's engine.

I never thought I'd see the day I'd say this but United deeply missed Darren Fletcher in midfield. As it was, their midfielders were unable to cope with Barca's passing game. After a strong showing against Arsenal, Anderson seemed to be disoriented by all the one-twos and tight ball control shown by Barcelona. Ryan Giggs never seemed comfortable at his position throughout the game and you have to wonder why Sir Alex Ferguson didn't start Paul Scholes instead and use Giggs as a substitute. Scholes was the one who eliminated Barcelona last year with his wonder strike and with the introduction of the new ball at Rome, he probably could have tried to take a whack at it. Furthermore, his presence could have brought more stability in central midfield especially to Michael Carrick who seemed to feel terribly alone against his opponents. The English midfielder probably had one of his worst games on Wednesday, reacting late defensively and being unusually off-the-mark when it came to distribute the ball to his wingers/strikers. On Barcelona's first goal, he was late to get back in the box in order to cover Nemanja Vidic. You could say that it isn't his job and that Rio Ferdinand was supposed to be there but Ferdinand was already covering Messi so his hands were pretty tied at the moment. And as all my various coaches liked to say, it's always better to outnumber your opponent when you're playing defensively, otherwise you're practically toast. After beating Evra on the left flank, all Eto'o had to do was skip past Vidic and had Van der Sar at his mercy. Had Carrick been there two seconds earlier, the play could have gone differently.

Speaking of Eto'o, Pep Guardiola's move of switching the African striker on the wing and putting Messi in the center was pure genius as it destabilized United's plans a bit. Evra was counting on stopping Messi while the Ferdinand-Vidic duo would have no problem outmuscling Eto'o. With the switch though, Ferdinand and Vidic often found themselves backing up as they didn't want to get beaten by Messi's speed while Evra was the one getting outmuscled by Eto'o. With the defense backing up, and the attack sticking to Barcelona's backline, United were completely and for awhile they fell into the same trap as Bayern did against Barcelona in the quarterfinals. The midfielders suddenly had a lot more work to do since they had to support both sides of their team which inevitably led to Barcelona's complete dominance in the second half.

Although United seemed to be bolstered by Tevez's entrance at halftime, their newly-found energy disappeared just as quickly as it came as they were reduced to two midfielders – with only one pure center midfielder I might add – making it even harder to a) get possession and b) keep possession of the ball. Messi's goal at the 69th minute off of a sublime pass by Xavi was the death blow to Ferguson's hope of recapturing the trophy since it was obvious that the Red Devils wouldn't come back from a two-goal deficit.

Despite Barcelona's brilliant showcase offensively, they were just as solid defensively, looking like they didn't miss Abidal, Marquez, and Daniel Alves at all. Puyol and Pique in particular had an excellent game with the latter probably playing the best game of his career. As for Puyol, his experience and calm served him well as he prevented first Rooney then Ronaldo from coming through his side of the field. Later on, he felt secure enough to go on offensive rushes of his own which caused even more problems to United's defense. Truly a great game from the captain.

In the end, Pep Guardiola had an incredible season as a rookie manager. He took a team that was starting to crumble under the presence of so many egos and turned it into a true powerhouse, bringing back glory to the blaugrana shirt. It's amazing to think that in his first season, he managed to guide his team to a treble. But in the words of Ferguson after Wednesday's game, “the better team won.” Now, if Henry and Eto'o still want to leave, it's their choice but they'll be throwing away their chance at a repeat after a magical season. Now, wouldn't that be special? Seeing Barcelona come back next year as United did this year? I, for one, can't wait for next season.

And so it ends. An uneventful scoreless draw against Arsenal at Old Trafford was enough for Manchester United to retain their title as Premiership Champions with one game left in the season. The title is United's third Premier League crown in a row and its' 18th in club history, tying Liverpool's record for the most titles. They also broke Liverpool's record of 11 titles in 18 seasons with 11 titles in 17 seasons – an amazing feat in the football world. Now, Sir Alex Ferguson's troops will try to go for a second Champions League trophy in two years next week to complete the 2008-2009 year in spectacular fashion.

Despite the invincible aura surrounding this year's Red Devils, the road to the title hasn't been easy. After a difficult start to the season where they struggled to score against middle to top-of-the-table opposition, the finally got into a groove after winning the Club World Cup in Japan. Indeed, after that competition, they went on to win eleven consecutive games, breaking the record in clean-sheets by going 15 games without conceding a goal. Unfortunaty, their poor record against the Big Four (one win, two draws, and five losses including a 4-1 thrashing at hands of Liverpool two months ago) put a bit of a damper on their title hopes with Liverpool refusing to let go of the top spot. Rio Ferdinand's back problems in the month of April led to a couple of close calls against Aston Villa and Sunderland where United managed to grab late goals to escape with the wins. They finally concluded the season on a high with a five-game winning streak including a masterful performance against Tottenham in the final week of April. Through it all, several players have come to shine while others haven't fared as well as expected. Here are the standouts of the 2008-2009 season.

Revelations:
- Rafael Da Silva: The young Brazilian fullback came out of nowhere to steal Wes Brown and Gary Neville's job at the right back. His technical ability has allowed him to play on a star-studded team without looking out of place while his pace has helped to develop a two-way game similar to Patrice Evra without hampering too much on his defensive. His inexperience and eagerness to tackle has sometimes put his team in a difficult situation but there is no doubt that he will develop into an excellent right-back.

- Frederiko Macheda: This young man only played a couple of games with the first team but he made the most of his experience by scoring crucial goals in important moments. His size and technical will definitely help him in the future and with United legend Solskjaer coaching the reserves, United fans know that this kid is in good hands.

- Danny Welbeck: Similarly to Macheda, Welbeck hasn't played much in the Premier League but was Ferguson's striker of choice in the FA Cup and the Carling Cup. Speed and creativity are his main assets.

Honorable mention: Jonny Evans

Bright stars:
- Ryan Giggs: The veteran midfielder was voted Player of the Year by his peers and there is no one in the league who deserves it more than him. From a speedy left-winger with mad skills, Giggs has turned into a calming presence on the pitch and a the kind of substitute that will either slow the game down if United is in the lead or find the magic pass or make an amazing run to get the game-winning goal. Since his legs are longer what they used to be, Giggs has become much more of a tactical player, relying on an excellent vision of the game to find a breakthrough.

- Darren Fletcher: I never really liked Fletcher but you have to give credit where credit is due. Although he doesn't have as much talent as his teammates, his hard work in midfield justified his role as a starter in the Champions League.

- Wayne Rooney: This striker never ceases to amaze me. I don't think you'll find a player more dedicated to the concept of 'team' than Wayne Rooney. His willingness to play as a wide player and cover opposing wingers has helped United in several occasions and there's no telling how good he will get.

Honorable mentions: Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick.

Deceptions:
- Nani: If there is one useless player on the United squad, it's surely Nani. Although he shined in a couple of games in the Carling Cup, the winger is too much of a defensive liability to play in important games. Furthermore, his skill-set and 'footballing brain' haven't seem to evolve enough to cover his deficiencies.

- Gary Neville: Since Neville is one of United's longest-serving player, I understand Ferguson's need to keep him around. Unfortunately the game has become to fast for Neville's aging legs and he is often beaten on one-on-ones making him a liability in Manchester's own end. Perhaps it is time to hang the boots up.

With two games left to go in the Premiership, Manchester United have greatly improved the odds of them winning the title by defeating Wigan 2-1 on Wednesday and consequently taking a six-point lead over Liverpool in the title race.

Despite a brilliant start to the game by United, it was Wigan who scored first under the pouring rain of the JJB Stadium as striker Rolladega took advantage of Vidic's slip on the wet turf to beat Van der Sar with a powerful shot to the near post.

The Red Devils continued to dominate the match but their lack of finishing hampered their search for an equalizer until Carlos Tevez came on. Under chants of “Argentina, Argentina,” the striker took only three minutes to put his mark on the game by re-directing Carrick's shot/cross past the Wigan goalkeeper who had dived the other way. After that, it was only a matter of time before the defending champions grabbed their second. At the 85th minute, Michael Carrick took advantage of a defensive lapse to seal the deal for United. Although his strike was from right outside the box, there didn't seem to be too much power on it. Instead, it was a precise shot that left no chance to the goalkeeper.

Wigan did their best as they had a couple opportunities of their own but the cream always rises to the top and Manchester United did their job to extend their lead over Liverpool. Six points now separate the two teams and Sir Alex Ferguson's squad only need one point on Saturday against Arsenal to confirm the title. It should be a cracker.

Manchester United's line-up: Edwin Van der Sar; John O'Shea, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra; Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes (Ryan Giggs, 74th), Anderson (Carlos Tevez, 57th); Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov (Park Ji-Sung, 88th).

The semifinals of this year's Champions League ended yesterday (make that the day before yesterday) on two very different notes. On the one hand, Manchester United finished the work started last week by easily beating Arsenal 3-1. On the other hand, Chelsea and Barcelona delivered a thrilling game - made even more dramatic by questionable refereeing and last gasp efforts - which ended on the score of 1-1 thus sending Barcelona to the May 27th finale.

After a lackluster performance at Old Trafford last week, Arsθne Wenger promised to fans that they would see a very different team on the second leg. Unfortunately for him, his squad didn't really have time to dictate the tone as they found themselves down 2-0 by the tenth minute of play. First, Park capitalized on Gibbs' accidental fall in the box to make it 1-0. Three minutes later, Cristiano Ronaldo, fouled by Van Persie who was trying to repair a giveaway by Gibson, scored on the free-kick and practically ensured Manchester United's place in the finale with a 3-0 aggregate score

With Real Madrid going undefeated for 18 games since last December, the second edition of this season's Clasico promised to be a passionate affair as the defending champions could pull up to one point behind this year's juggernaut, Barcelona. What happened instead was a real massacre as the Blaugrana simply ran over Madrid by putting six goals past a helpless Casillas and ensure a seven-point lead over their closest rival in the race for the title.

The home team started pretty well as they exploited a shaky Eric Abidal on Barca's left flank. In the 13th minute, Sergio Ramos simply outran the defender before delivering a precise cross to Gonzalo Higuain who headed the ball past Victor Valdes for the first goal of the game. The whole play seemed slowed down as Robben and Toure collided at the edge of the box consequently breaking Puyol and Pique's focus as the defenders let Higuain slip between the two of them and take a free header near the six-yard box

After a high-scoring Round of 8, the competition tightened up a bit for the first leg of the semi-finals. Only one goal was scored as Manchester United defeated Arsenal at Old Trafford while Chelsea held Barcelona to a scoreless draw at the Nou Camp.

The semis kicked off with the Spanish giants meeting last year's finalists on Tuesday. The game was basically an exercise of attack versus defense with Barcelona attacking and Chelsea doing their best to hold the fort. This kind of game is the reason why I stopped watching Barca in La Liga so I was very disappointed of the outcome. Chelsea had one scoring chance in the entire game and that was after a sloppy back pass by Rafael Marquez late in the first half. Didier Drogba pounced on the loose ball but Victor Valdes stood tall against the striker's two attempts. Other than that, it was all Barcelona particularly in midfield where Iniesta's skill and Toure's determination were too much to handle for Lampard and Ballack. Lampard was completely invisible in this game, and his substitution at the 70th only helped the Blues to retreat into a even more defensive shell for the final third of the game

It's funny how a penalty can change an entire game. When Michael Carrick was brought down inside the box by Gomes, you just knew that a penalty would completely shift the momentum depending on its outcome. Tottenham were leading 2-0 at half-time and Gomes was on fire stopping every United threat before that fateful call was made.

For a minute, I actually thought that Cristiano Ronaldo would choke on the shot. It turns out I was partly right. He scored the penalty but that was a terrible – some might call it bold – attempt on net, just shooting it right down the middle at chest height. The Red Machine really kicked into high gear from that point on. Ten minutes after the penalty, United would go on to score three goals in the span of five minutes. It sounds crazy when you think about it, but in five minutes the score went from 2-1 Tottenham to 4-2 United. Rooney and Ronaldo both got a double and assisted on each other's goals as Gomes' performance started to go south in a hurry. Berbatov's goal at the 78th minute exposed the Spurs' nervous and panicky defense who had been pretty good in the first half

After draws by Manchester United (2-2 against Porto) and Arsenal (1-1 against Villareal), fans were treated to more goals on Wednesday as Barcelona easily took care of Bayern at the Camp Nou while Chelsea silenced the Anfield crowd with a 3-1 victory over Liverpool.

After Bayern's impressive performance in the round of 16, everyone expected an entertaining game against the blaugrana. Sadly, the Germans' porous defense were no match for Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi as Barcelona found themselves up 3-0 (Messi at the 8th minute and 37th, and Eto'o in the 12th) before Bayern had even registered a shot on Victor Valdes. The reason for that total dominance was pretty simple. From the opening whistle, Barcelona put pressure on the German defense who had no support from their midfielder, leading to several giveaways and panicky clearances which resulted in the home side having the ball most of the time. Bayern's defense also couldn't deal with their opponents' movements. All four Barcelona goals came from great passing around the edge of the box as the ball was perfectly distributed from side to side

Knowing that the opposition were currently weak in defense, Jesualdo Ferreira had the good idea to field an ambitious, all-attack team on the sacred grounds of Old Trafford. In an attempt to erase his defense's shortcomings, Sir Alex Ferguson deployed a strangely defensive midfield with Park, Carrick, Scholes and Fletcher all getting the nod for the start. The new formation did more harm than good as United found themselves held to a draw in the first leg of the Champions League's Round of 8.

The match wasn't even five minutes old when Cristian Rodriguez scored Porto's first goal after a foolish giveaway by Jonny Evans. However, similarly to Aston Villa's second goal on Sunday, the goal wasn't entirely the defense's fault. Here again, one had to look at Cristiano Ronaldo's arrogant play a couple of seconds earlier to find the origin of the action. As a matter of fact, after his brilliant performance against Villa (save for that mistake that led to the second goal), Ronaldo had a pretty terrible game against Porto marked by arrogance with the ball and selfishness when it came to passes. It felt like he wanted to dribble his way past every opponent instead of looking towards his teammates for possibilities. Thankfully, Manchester's other 'R' had came to play as Wayne Rooney equalized the mark in the 14th minute by beautifully anticipating and intercepting Bruno Alves' pass to his keeper before putting the ball in the back of the deserted net

Without Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic manning center defense, was it really a surprise to see shades of the early-2000s Manchester United whose defense often had difficult games? As the starting line-up stepped on the field on Sunday afternoon, Patrice Evra was the only sure thing in that makeshift defense. Berbatov's injury and Rooney's suspension made things even worse as the Red Devils would have to play without their two regular strikers, leaving the energetic – but short – Carlos Tevez as the lone man in front with Ryan Giggs free to roam as he pleased.

Aston Villa probably surprised their hosts by taking a proactive approach to the game instead of letting United take the ball to them. Cristiano Ronaldo's icebreaker in the 13th minute – on a rare indirect free-kick inside the box – didn't really reflect the direction of the play in opening minutes which was heavily in Villa's favor. Carew made things right by equalizing the mark at the half-hour mark

Real Madrid – Almeria: 3-0
Juande Ramos seems to have found the perfect solution to strengthen his team's left side both offensively and defensively. Indeed, with the departure of Robinho, that side of the field seemed to cause problems for the Meringues as they had no reliable wingers other than Robben for the attacking side of things while Marcelo's inexperience made things dicey in defense. All of that is past now as Marcelo is slowly taking over the role of left-winger with a defensive side that betrays his left-back origin. Behind him, Heinze's experience helps to plug any hole the Brazilian might have left while Lassana Diarra's tireless running makes sure that the two men are properly covered in case of a major breakdown.

With less than ten games remaining to the season, both Arsenal and Newcastle United were looking to improve their situation in the standings – the former wanted to consolidate their fourth place while the latter hoped to avoid the relegation zone. After a scoreless first half, both teams exploded in the second half with four goals scored in the span of ten minutes.

The match was pretty quiet until the 22nd minute when Newcastle were awarded a penalty. Unfortunately for the Magpies, Martins' weak effort was easily stopped by Almunia who had dived the right way. The pace of the game quickened after that opportunity with both teams getting chances on goal. Martins was the busiest player as he tried to make up for his missed penalty but his numerous attempts went wide of the goal. At the other end, Arshavin's rocket at the 34th minute shaved off the crossbar while Van Persie was denied once by Harper and another time by center-back Steven Taylor who was majestic in defense, blocking shots throughout the game

Wow. What a mess. In what was supposed to be THE game of the season, penalties, cards and shoddy play stole the show as Liverpool stunned the Old Trafford faithful by crushing their (and my) beloved team.

The game started with the home side taking the game to Liverpool. Wave after wave of United's attack build up only to crash against Liverpool's solid back-four. Throughout those early stages (and the rest of the game for that matter), United's weakest link was probably midfielder Anderson who really showed his inexperience that day with bad turns, poor ball-control, poor passing, and poor movement off the ball

In the lead-up to the second match opposing Manchester United and Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho openly boasted the fact that in his five visits at Old Trafford, he had only lost once. After a 0-0 draw at the San Siro, a 1-1 score would have been enough for the Nerazurri to go through. Unfortunately for them, Van der Sar's posts answered the call while his forwards put two goals past Julio Cesar in crucial moments to put the game beyond doubt.

United didn't waste time getting on the scoresheet with Vidic's header ending in the back of the net after only three minutes of play. On the set-piece, Patrick Vieira's coverage of the defender was simply pitiful as he could stop and stare at Vidic rising up to meet the ball. The home side was much looser after that, leading to some sloppy plays quickly picked up by Inter's midfielders. At the 28th minute, Ibrahimovic's header hit the crossbar while Stankovic's shot at the 36th was tipped away by Van der Sar. Inch by inch, Milan slowly started to control the game, and their mobility made passing a lot more easier than at the beginning of the game. Ibrahimovic, who was well covered by Ferdinand and Vidic, decided to move a lot more, measuring himself to both O'Shea and Evra in order to gain some advantage
