2008/2009 UEFA Champions League - Group E Preview
September 17th 2008 01:06
The defending champions, Manchester United, find themselves in a group where the battle for second place will be especially fierce between Scottish giants Celtic and the tough Yellow Submarine – Villareal. Danish club Aalborg is only there for appearance's sake.
Manchester United
The Red Devils have been slow to get going in the Premiership, so they probably would have preferred to see Aalborg first instead of Villareal. Cristiano Ronaldo's return will be a welcome addition as United have been struggling to score lately. However, with Ronaldo, Rooney, and Tevez all ready to play, one has to wonder where Berbatov will fit in all this. No worries though, Sir Alex Ferguson always find a way to get his team through, I have no doubt that he'll do the same this year.
Celtic
Although they've never gone far in the Champions League, the Celts are one tough team whose crowd support can't be dismissed whether they're playing at home or away. Their goalkeeper, Artur Boruc, had a strong showing in the Euro 2008 despite having a mediocre defense in front of him. Let's hope he can keep that same great form, and make the necessary saves.
Aalborg Boldspilklub
The Danish had easy qualifiers, beating obscure clubs such as Modrica and Kaunas. Now, they're in the big stage, but I don't think they'll get a point in this group.
Villareal
The Yellow Submarine surprised everyone last season by finishing second in La Liga. They'll look to show the same determination on the European stage this year. They don't have any big names on their roster but most of their starting line-up have had great experiences on the international stage. They can easily go through the knock-out and take out the powerhouses one by one.
