EPL Pre-Season: Manchester United Cruise To 2-0 Win Over Malaysia's Select XI
July 21st 2009 02:34
In a rematch of Saturday's pre-season confrontation, Manchester United had an easier time dominating their Malaysian opponents thanks to the solid performance of their midfield maestros, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs.
The visitors scored twice in the span of two minutes to effectively demoralize the Malaysian squad. First, Frederico Macheda coolly converted Fletcher's cross just outside the six-yard box in the tenth minute. Then, Owen followed up two minutes later with his second of the pre-season by beating two defenders to the loose ball inside the box. Although United had several more scoring chances throughout the game, the two goals stood as the difference between the two sides.
Unlike Saturday's game, United's passing was a lot better this time around with both wings getting their fair share of the ball. Giggs and Carrick were instrumental to this improvement as they were the starting point of almost every play. The Red Devils' sustained possession of the ball had the benefit of tiring the opposition as players constantly had to run after the ball as well as a quiet night for both Foster and Kuszczak.
Individually, Tosic and Scholes both showed improvement from last game. Although the Serb winger was a lot more composed on the ball, his crosses became a lot less effective once the Malaysian right-back figured out how to deal with him. Since United had most of the possession, Scholes had less running to do and was a lot more threatening offensively. Unfortunately, none of his trademark long-range strikes were on target.
Sir Alex Ferguson will now fly up to South Korea where Park Ji-Sung will join them in anticipation of Friday's game.
Manchester United's line-up: Ben Foster (Tomasz Kuszczak, h-t); Gary Neville (John O'Shea, 61st), Wes Brown, Jonny Evans (Rio Ferdinand, 61st), Fabio (Patrice Evra, 57th); Darren Fletcher (Darron Gibson, 66th), Michael Carrick (Anderson, 66th), Ryan Giggs (Paul Scholes, 68th), Zoran Tosic (Nani, 61st), Frederico Macheda (Wayne Rooney, 66th), Michael Owen (Dimitar Berbatov, 61st).
