EPL Week 1 Results & Fantasy News
August 17th 2009 18:49
The Premiership got off to a bang last weekend with no teams settling for draws. Chelsea huffed and puffed to a 2-1 win against Hull City while Arsenal gave a footballing lesson to Everton at Goodison Park. Manchester United did the strict minimum against Birmingham to get their three points while Liverpool couldn't break down a well-organized Tottenham. In other games, ex-Gunner Adebayor started his season at Manchester City with a goal in a 2-0 win. Ex-Spur Darren Bent also started on the right foot by scoring the only goal in Sunderland's meeting with Bolton. The full list of results follows.

This season, I'm also having a go at Fantasy football on various sports sites across the web. Since this is my first year, I'm not expecting much but I'll put some comments on my progress in the EPL results post every week. So, how did I do for this first week? Read on to find out.
I took a considerable amount of points thanks to my strikers and goalkeepers. Having Drogba score two goals was perfect for my squad but I couldn't help to be annoyed at him for his yellow card that he received after taking his shirt off to celebrate his second goal. Rooney was my other striker and also my team captain which allowed him to have as many points as Drogba. It's too bad Owen couldn't have finished his golden chance at the hand the game because I'm pretty sure that Rooney would have gotten an assist. I had a little variation in one my teams with Van Persie in Drogba's place. He too had a great round with his two assists in Arsenal's win.
As for my goalkeepers, my first choice, West Ham's Robert Green, had an excellent game with a clean sheet to boot. So did Fulham's Schwarzer and Stoke City's Sorensen, my other keepers depending on my various squads.
In defense, Fulham's Hangeland and Hughes brought in a decent haul as did Arsenal's Varmaelen. Varmaelen was one of those players where I didn't know who to choose so I picked him, knowing that he would debut on Saturday. I was glad to see that it worked out so well. Chelsea defenders and midfielders were the big deceptions for me and this is where I lost a lot. West Ham's Mark Noble was my only good pick in midfield as Carrick's absence really hurt me points-wise. So if I can figure how to better evaluate midfielders, I think I'll be fine (as fine as a rookie can be anyway).
Week 2 is coming up tomorrow and I've got two transfers to make (ideally two, but it could be more as long as I get a decent return). I was thinking about adding a striker to make a 4-3-3 and switch up one of my midfielders. If you guys have any idea of who I should pick, please put it in the comments below. Right now, Rolladega seems to be my best bet in front since I can't really afford Bent unless by dropping one of my expensive midfielders (Ashley Young, Noble, Carrick, Valencia / Lampard), I pick up a low-budget one. What do you guys think?
