EPL Week 6: Arsenal Rips Through Wigan 4-0
September 20th 2009 18:14
After two consecutive losses in the Premiership and a disappointing mid-week showing in the Champions League, Arsenal had to seize the opportunity to get back on the right track this weekend. Arsene Wenger's men responded positively to the challenge, easily disposing of Wigan to the score of 4-0.
The Gunners dominated the opening twenty minutes but their final pass never seemed to get to their man. It was defender Vermaelen who finally broke the deadlock in the 24th minute by heading in Van Persie's corner-kick. As the hosts continued to dominate, Vermaelen scored his second goal less than five minutes into the second half with a beautiful left-footed strike after a great one-two with Song.
Down 2-0, Wigan could only try to limit the damages for the rest of the second half but the Gunners, determined to get back to their winning ways, didn't let up. At the hour-mark, Eboue deflected Eduardo's shot from inside the box to put the hosts ahead 3-0. The pace of the game slowed down considerably after that goal as the Gunners seemed content to show off their passing skills.
Fabregas capped off the game with a goal of his own in the 89th minute, tapping in Bendtner's cross at the near post.
Although the win came against lowly Wigan, Arsenal needed the three points in order to stay in touch with the top five. They'll get another chance to climb up in the standings next week as they'll face Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Arsenal line-up: Vito Mannone; Bacary Sagna, William Gallas, Thomas Vermaelen, Gael Clichy; Emmanuel Eboue (Tomas Rosicky, 73rd), Alexandre Song, Cesc Fabregas, Abou Diaby (Aaron Ramsey,66th); Eduardo (Nicklas Bendtner, 73rd), Robin Van Persie.
