La Liga Week 6: Barcelona Slaughters Atletico Madrid 6-1
October 6th 2008 16:33
Fans on both sides of the fence were gleeful with anticipation for this encounter in the sixth week of the Spanish season. Indeed, one point was separating the two teams in the standings, and a confrontation between Messi and Aguero two world-class Argentine strikers was not to be taken lightly. However, all those expectations went away when the match became one-way traffic with Barca attacking, and Atletico doing their best to hold on.
What is there to say about a game which had a 5-1 scoreline before half an hour of play? Barca struck fast in the first five minutes, scoring on a corner-kick at the third minute via Marquez's header, and a penalty kick awarded to them when a defender's hip came into contact with Messi. The two goals completely broke Atletico's resolve, and the third goal scored by Messi on a free-kick while Coupet was busy setting up his wall was downright humiliating. Two minutes later, Maxi Rodriguez gave some to his teammates by reducing the score to 3-1, but when the captain went down with an injury a couple of minutes later, you just knew that it was game over for Atletico. Eto'o, Gudjohnsen, and Henry scored the other goals for the Blaugrana all of them were the results of superb passing by the home side who were simply on fire.
Messi and Gudjohnsen almost got a double. At the 39th minute, the Argentine striker made a superb run from the halfway line to the penalty spot, but his chip over Coupet's sprawling body went inches wide of the post. Iniesta struck the post twice, but his excellent play was overshadowed by his horrible haircut which looked like a really messed up mohawk. Guardiola seems to have found the solution for Henry and Eto'o. Both strikers have scored in the last two games where Henry has been a substitute while Eto'o started the games, but I think it's just a matter of time before Henry begs for a start. Gudjohnsen started the last two games after all.
In the end, you could tell that the crowd really enjoyed themselves. It's the first time that I really heard the Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole chant in a stadium, usually the fans only sing the teams' anthems, hymns, whatever. Messi got a well-deserved standing ovation when he was replaced, and from that moment on, there is no doubt who is the king of Spain.
Barcelona's line-up: Victor Valdes; Carles Puyol, Rafael Marquez, Gerard Pique, Eric Abidal; Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez (Seydou Keita, 73rd), Eidur Gudjohnsen; Lionel Messi (Bojan Krkic, 69th), Samuel Eto'o (Thierry Henry, 59th).
