Barcelona – Mallorca: 3-1
I'm starting to feel like a broken record here, but it was another win for Barcelona on Saturday. The Blaugrana's winning streak now extends to five as Pep Guardiola's troops keep rolling along. Unlike their previous victories, this one wasn't easy as Barcelona struggled to get the rust out of their system after the two-week break. Puyol especially looked a bit off-balance in the first half, and his absence in the center of defense (he switched positions with right-back Victor Sanchez after five minutes of play) proved devastating for the home side who conceded the first goal in the 14th minute on Mallorca's first real opportunity.

Barcelona cranked up their game after that goal and Henry equalized the mark at the half-hour mark as he was completely forgotten at the far post after a Barcelona corner. Then at the 75th minute, Andres Iniesta celebrated his return by scoring the winning goal. From that point on, Mallorca players started to lose their focus, resorting to nasty tackles to express their frustration. Finally, Toure added the insurance goal at the 94th minute as the visitors found themselves down to ten men in the 89th minute.

For once in what seems like a long while, the focus wasn't all there among Barcelona players. It took the entrance of Daniel Alves and Iniesta for them to get the offensive punch needed to get through the nine-men defense. They were probably getting the kinks out of their system. Nothing to worry about in my mind.

Barcelona's line-up: Victor Valdes; Victor Sanchez (Daniel Alves, 55th), Carles Puyol, Rafael Marquez (Sylvinho, 70th), Eric Abidal; Yaya Toure, Xavi Hernandez, Eidur Gudjohnssen; Aleksandr Hleb (Andres Iniesta, 66th), Samuel Eto'o, Thierry Henry.

Real Madrid – Villareal: 1-0
One player stole the show at the Bernabeu on Sunday as Madrid edged over Villareal with a 1-0 win. Arjen Robben was the goalscorer and put on an inspired display that really showed how great a player he can be when he's healthy. Right as the game passed the half-hour mark, the winger dribbled his way past four Villareal players to finish with a beautiful curling shot that left no chance to the goalkeeper. It was the second time in the game Robben had made the run (he hit the crossbar on his first run) and it wasn't the last. He spent the entire match running Villareal's left-back completely ragged. He was speed, style, and substance all wrapped up in a neat little package, and brought the Bernabeu to its feet when he was substituted in the final minute of the game.

Two other players shone in this victory. First, Iker Casillas came up with splendid saves in the second period as his team were under constant pressure. As a matter of fact, the Meringues rarely left their half of the field in the first fifteen minutes of the second half. Secondly, new signing Lassana Diarra came up with a convincing performance reminiscent of Claude Makelele, winning the ball several times in midfield. He had a couple of mental breakdowns including a back pass straight to Villareal's Llorente who was stopped by Casillas, but had a pretty good game overall. Huntelaar also debuted with his new club, and showed nice capabilities (he came close to scoring in the 39th minute) which seem promising.

With that win, the defending champions leapfrogged from sixth to third, ten points behind current leaders Barcelona. If they can keep the pace (and if Barcelona drops a couple), the next meeting between the two will prove to be very important. And I for one would like to see Robben play against Barcelona.

Real Madrid's line-up: Iker Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Fabio Cannavaro, Gabriel Heinze; Arjen Robben (Christoph Metzelder, 90th), Lassana Diarra (Rafael Van der Vaart, 77th), Fernando Gago, Wesley Sneijder; Raul, Huntelaar (Royston Drenthe, 55th).

When Iker Casillas stopped Samuel Eto'o's penalty kick at the 69th minute, you could tell that the defending champions were starting to believe that they could hold off La Liga's current leaders to a draw. Although Barcelona had most of the possession during the game, they couldn't get through an overly physical Madrid side who constantly brought down Lionel Messi to his knees, forcing the Blaugrana to explore other options. When Barcelona did penetrate into Madrid's box, their shots were blocked by either Cannavaro or Metzelder who made a pretty solid tandem in center defense.

Although Madrid defended well, their offense was a different story. Their minimal amount of possession was wasted away by a midfield unable to make the transition from defense to attack and Drenthe's inexperience prevented them from taking advantage of fast breaks. There's no telling how the game would've turned out had Robben been there, or if Drenthe had capitalized on his breakaway at the 25th minute. It took a set-piece for Barcelona to open the scoring at the 82nd minute when Eto'o deflected Puyol's header past Casillas. Eight minutes later, Messi confirmed Barcelona's win by adding in his tenth of the season.

With that win, Barcelona are now eight points clear of their closest rival and twelve points clear of Real Madrid, leaving many to speculate that the race for the title may already be over. Looking at Madrid's play on Saturday, you have to wonder why they haven't been as intense as they were against Barca since the beginning of the season. For the classico, everyone put their shoulder to the wheel defensively, from the strikers all the way to Casillas, everyone covered everyone. Before that encounter, the defensive midfielder and defenders were usually left to fend off for themselves while the others simply watched the opposition walk into their box. The match against Barcelona was a nice change of pace. Let's hope they'll keep this level of intensity in the oncoming weeks.

Barcelona – Valencia: 4-0
There is no stopping the steamrolling machine that is Barcelona. Without La Liga's current leading scorer in the line-up, the Blaugrana put up another impressive offensive display with a 4-0 win over Valencia including a hat-trick by Thierry Henry. The Blaugrana made their intentions clear from the first minute of the game when Xavi's shot rattled off the post after a defensive mistake in Valencia's backline. At the 19th minute, Henry scored his first of the game after a nice pass from Toure. The goal was a carbon copy of the hundreds he scored under the Arsenal shirt in the Premiership. Less than ten minutes later, he scored his second, giving Barcelona a 2-0 advantage against Valencia. The home side then added a third goal before the half via Daniel Alves.

As the second half went on, it was clear that the Valencia players lost their hope little by little. They started to lose their focus, fouling Barcelona players here and there instead of concentrating on their football. At the 78th minute, Henry completed his hat-trick thanks to a nice set-up by Bojan who made sure to take out two defenders and the goalkeeper to give Henry a wide open net. It's a moment of solace for the French striker who hasn't been comfortable ever since he joined the club. Still, this performance won't make him take Eto'o's place as the center forward. Patience will be key for Henry.

Barcelona's line-up: Victor Valdes; Daniel Alves, Rafael Marquez, Carles Puyol, Eric Abidal; Xavi Hernandez (Seydou Keita, 83rd), Yaya Toure, Eidur Gudjohnssen; Lionel Messi (Pedro Rodriguez, 81st), Thierry Henry, Aleksandr Hleb (Bojan Krkic, 72nd).

Real Madrid – Sevilla: 3-4
The point of a football game is to score more goals than your opponent, but limiting your opponents' chances of scoring is a pretty good start. The Meringues don't seem to understand that concept. Game after game, their defense is as leaky as a sinking ship. Against Sevilla on Saturday, the defending champions surrendered four goals while they could only score three. The first goal was scored at the 2nd minute of play after Casillas made a rare harazardous exit from his net in order to punch away a cross coming in from the left. The goalkeeper missed his clearance, and the ball found itself at the feet of an opposing player at the far post who only had to kick it into a wide open net. Madrid equalized at the 18th minute when Guti's free-kick connected with Raul's head. Unfortunately, Sevilla took the lead once again three minutes later, and added another goal at the 38th minute.

For a while, it looked like the game was over right then and there. Madrid were down 3-1, and weren't exactly producing some inspired play. All that changed at the 66th minute when Higuain, out of nowhere, scored his team's second goal. Two minutes later, Gago equalized the mark after another free-kick superbly struck by Guti. Hope was restored in the Bernabeu faithful. However, everything came crashing back down when Arjen Robben was sent off. With six minutes left to go, Sevilla scored the winning goal, and consequently passed the defending champions in the standings.

Not only does Madrid need another defensive midfielder, but I'm also starting to think that their defense needs a more intimidating presence. Face it. How can their opponents be afraid of entering into the box when their opposition is offensively-minded Sergio Ramos and Marcelo, old legs Salgado, and lackluster Cannavaro. Don't get me wrong, I love Cannavaro but he hasn't been the same since joining Madrid. Furthermore, he doesn't have the presence you would get if a John Terry or a Rio Ferdinand or a Vidic played in his position. You could say that it's because of his short stature, but Barcelona are doing pretty well with Puyol as the general of the defense. The difference is that Puyol is a warrior. He'll stick to your shorts, snap at your heels, and put in some solid tackles all within the rules of the game. Cannavaro on the other hand is more cerebral. He'll watch you and wait for the perfect moment to step in. He is a cerebral player, not a physical one, and that is probably from his career in the Serie A. Maybe that is the problem of Madrid's defenders. They think too much. They worry about their positioning and not getting into Casillas' way; all it takes is one opposing player to get through before the whole defense turns off-kilter. Anyways, next week is “El Clasico,” and with the way Barcelona is playing, it's looking more like a slaughter than a classic confrontation.

Real Madrid – Getafe: 1-3
Things are getting worse and worse at the Bernabeu as Real Madrid put up yet another disappointing performance against a lower-tiered team. After holding Barcelona to a draw, Getafe exploited every flaw in the Madrid defense to defeat the defending champions 3-1. They first hit the net two minutes into the game, forcing the defending champions to give their all to find a way through Getafe's defense. Unfortunately for Bernd Schuster's men, they suffered a major setback in the first half when Sneijder was taken off the field in a stretcher with his second injury of the season. Rafael Van der Vaart took his place, but it was clear that Madrid simply weren't the same after the incident.

2008-2009 La Liga Wrap-Up (Week 1-10)

November 21st 2008 23:21
After back-to-back league titles, Real Madrid started the season with hope of getting their third title in three years. Meanwhile, their archrival, Barcelona wiped the slate clean in the offseason, bringing in their own Pep Guardiola as the new manager, and getting rid of superstars Ronaldinho, Deco, and Zambrotta. After ten games, here's how the teams stack up.

Real Madrid – Malaga: 4-3
In a match plagued by poor refereeing (for both sides, I might add), it was the defending champions who came out on top thanks to Gonzalo Higuain's brilliant performance. Once again, their opponents took advantage of Madrid's weakness on the left side to open the score five minutes into the game. Winger Eliseu easily got past both Marcelo and Heinze before delivering a low cross into the box, but the ball surprisingly came back to him as Baha's strike hit both Sergio Ramos and the post. With Iker Casillas out of position, Eliseu only had to push the ball into the wide open net. Two minutes later, Marcelo repaired his defensive lapse by making a penetrating run in Malaga's box. His shot was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Higuain didn't miss the rebound to put the score at 1-1. Madrid had most of the possession for the next ten minutes, repeatedly testing Malaga's goalkeeper who gave several huge rebounds. At the 17th minute, Malaga took the lead once again thanks to poor marking by Madrid. At the 36th minute, the home side was rewarded a penalty which was easily converted by Higuain. Tied at 2-2, the Meringues would lose a big piece of their team before half-time when Sergio Ramos was sent off for stepping on an opposing player's chest.

Barcelona – Almeria: 5-0
Two weeks after thrashing Atletico Madrid 6-1, the Blaugrana put on another show on Saturday, defeating Almeria 5-0. This time around, Eto'o managed to complete the hat-trick (he was limited to a double on two occasions), and Dani Alves finally put one of his fiery rockets past the opposing goalkeeper. But like the game against Atletico, Barcelona put their feet off the gas pedal after the first 45 minutes where all five goals were scored. The good news is that Henry has now three goals in six appearances, creating a nice problem for Guardiola. I'd still go with Eto'o but knowing you have another potent striker on the bench is a good thing for any coach. For once in a long while, Barcelona is actually looking like a team rather than a bunch of individuals.

Barcelona – Real Betis: 3-2
Two goals from striker Eto'o in the span of five minutes had Barcelona cruising into a comfortable lead at the end of the first half. Both goals were set up by Messi who's getting better and better. Unfortunately, Barca lost that lead around the hour-mark when an indirect free-kick somehow found its way through the four-man wall at the 58th minute, then a subtle chip to second post beat Valdes for the second time at the 66th minute. Guardiola wasn't going to be satisfied with the draw however, and quickly put Gudjohnsen, Busquets, and Bojan on the field. Less than ten minutes after his entrance, the Icelandic midfielder put his team in front by finishing a cross to the far post. Bojan would also get a chance a couple of minutes later, but he was denied by the keeper.

Something different today – two games in one post. In the first week of the 2008-2009 season, the two Spanish giants fell away from home, following the trend of the EPL and Serie A's recent upsets.
