Saturday was a special day at Old Trafford for fans and players alike since it was the testimonial match for legendary 'supersub' Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. As if it was a signature move, the 'baby-faced assassin' didn't start the match. Instead, he was assigned as a substitute to finally come on the pitch at the 68th minute in Carlos Tevez's place. Although he didn't score the winning goal, the Norwegian striker showed that he still had it, putting keeper Cristian Alvarez to work in no time.

Once again, it was Paul Scholes who would be the man of the show during the first half, directing United's attack as if it was a symphony. His nicely chipped ball at the 18th minute left no chance to Espanyol's goalkeeper but the crowd would erupt in “ooooohs” when that same ball crashed against the post. The English midfielder would end the half with the most shots on goal along with striker Carlos Tevez.

As superb as he was offensively during the first half, Scholes would prove to be terrible defensively in the second as he committed late challenges after late challenges. Thankfully, the referee was a very patient man, and didn't seem willing to dish out cards as if they were candy (there were A LOT of bad tackles in this game, on both sides). United wouldn't be too menacing in that half until 'supersub' entered the game at the 68th minute. Ten minutes after his entrance, Solskjaer would force Cristian to make the save of the game with a superb left-footed volley that looked like a sure goal. In the same minute, the striker would get another chance on goal, forcing another save by Cristian. Although Ole didn't score, those two attempts gave life to a match that had turned into a tackle-fest in midfield. Finally, at the 81st minute, youngster Fraizier Campbell tipped the ball over Cristian for the winning-goal after a nice through-pass by Giggs.

This may be a short match report for you guys, but the truth is, this game was all about Solskjaer and nothing else. From the crowd singing “Ole Ole Ole Ole,” to the striker's final lap around the Theater of Dreams with his three children, Saturday was a hearfelt farewell to an United legend.

Campbell's goal

Manchester United's line-up: Edwin Van der Sar (Tomasz Kuszczak, h-t); Danny Simpson, Rio Ferdinand (Wes Brown, h-t), Nemanja Vidic (Jonny Evans, 62nd), Patrice Evra (Mikael Silvestre, h-t); Darron Gibson (John O'Shea, 62nd), Darren Fletcher, Paul Scholes, Nani (Fraizier Campbell, h-t); Ryan Giggs, Carlos Tevez (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, 68th).

Here's something you don't see every day, two English sides confronting under the stifling African heat of Nigeria's capital, Abuja. To make matters worse, both teams had played the day before, making fatigue and injuries a big concern in a game that could be seen as a preview of the Community Shields match coming up on August 10.

For this occasion, Sir Alex Ferguson elected to start the match with a mixture of youth and experience, putting Tomasz Kuszczak (Ben Amos replaced him at the 76th minute) in goal; Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans (Craig Cathcart, 65th), and Mikael Silvestre in defense; Darron Gibson (Rodrigo Possebon 72nd), Michael Carrick (John O'Shea, 65th), Paul Scholes, and Chris Eagles (Tom Cleverley, 78th) in midfield; Carlos Tevez, and Fraizier Campbell in attack. Harry Redknapp opted for a first-team starting eleven with David James in goal; Glen Johnson, Noé Pamarot, Sylvain Distin, and Herman Hreidarsson in defense; John Utaka, Papa Bouba Diop, Pedro Mendes, and Niko Kranjcar in midfield; Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch in attack.

United quickly got their first scoring chance at the 4th minute of play, when Campbell got fouled by defender Glen Johnson inside the 18-yard box. Carlos Tevez scored on the penalty-kick but the referee decided to impose a retake as Eagles had inadvertently entered the box before Tevez had taken his shot. The Argentine striker's second attempt crashed on the crossbar, and Portsmouth could finally breathe as they had avoided the worst. However, it was United who would continue to get the best scoring chances during the first half with Chris Eagles missing the un-missable at the 24th minute (on a one-on-one against the goalkeeper, he somehow managed to kick the ball wide), and Campbell getting denied by James at the 37th minute. At the other end, Vidic was doing an admirable job in challenging Crouch on every high ball while Evans showed great composure in making timely tackles and denying Portsmouth's wingers a way through the middle. Surprisingly, Ferguson made no changes at half-time, keeping the same players on the field while Redknapp used almost all his substitutions in that timeframe as Djimi Traoré, Sean Davis, and Lauren came on for Hreidarsson, Mendes and Kranjcar. Before that, Redknapp had made two substitutions in the dying minutes of the first half due to injuries, Linvoy Primus replacing Pamarot at the 40th minute, and Glen Little replacing Utaka at the 44th minute.

The second half was midfielder Paul Scholes' show as the tempo slowed down to a walking pace with neither team's players willing to summon the strength for tiresome and useless sprints. This is where Scholes took control of the game almost by himself and became the cornerstone of United's passing. Every ball had to get to him before going to someone else. Carrick, United's usual playmaker, completely disappeared in that instance, leaving the whole center of midfield to the veteran. The funny thing is, despite all the passes coming from or going to Scholes, Pompey's players never thought to pressure the midfielder, leaving him with plenty of time to find the best options. Amidst all of this possession time for United, Eagles managed to score the first goal at the 50th minute, after Portsmouth's defenders failed to clear a rebound. Tevez also got on the scoresheet with his first goal of the pre-season, a right-foot strike to the near post that surprised James who was probably expecting a more angled shot. It was the striker's last touch of the game as he was replaced by Ryan Giggs at the 65th minute. Portsmouth managed to pull one back at the 90th minute thanks to a great individual effort by Defoe. The conceded goal was United's sole blemish defensively and I find it slightly paradoxical that United always seems to play solidly at the back and just when you think that there's no way in, the opposition manages to score a goal. Perhaps the goaltending needs to be looked at.

In conclusion, Manchester United celebrated their fourth victory of the pre-season, and are undefeated so far. Their youngsters are playing great and the veterans are slowly finding their groove. Everything is right on track.

My man of the match: Paul Scholes. The midfielder shone in a brilliant display. He also almost scored on a volley that could've been one of the best goals of this pre-season.

After being held to a 1-1 draw against the Kaizer Chiefs in the first game of the Vodacom Challenge, Manchester United came out strong in their second encounter scoring four goals without reply. Once again, four reserves players got a spot in the starting eleven: Craig Cathcart started in center defense alongside Nemanja Vidic while Danny Simpson played right-back (John O'Shea took the left-back position), Rodrigo Possebon got the call in central midfield alongside Michael Carrick, and Lee Martin earned his third start of the pre-season on the left wing. With Martin on the left and Darren Fletcher on the right, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to mix things up a bit in attack, putting Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs up front.

Despite having more scoring opportunities than their opponents during the first half, United struggled to keep possession of the ball as their midfielders couldn't come up the park, forcing the forwards to come get the ball at the halfway line. Consequently, there was always a huge gap between the strikers and the midfielders when Manchester were on the attack, and Giggs and Rooney often found themselves without support when they had the ball near the Chiefs' 18-yard box. However, once the wingers – Fletcher and Martin - found their way up the flanks, the South African defenders had a lot of trouble preventing incoming crosses which often connected with Giggs inside the box. It was the veteran winger/forward who finally broke the deadlock at the 40th minute of play when he volleyed Martin's cross past goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune. Interestingly enough, Giggs used his right foot to strike the ball even though the left-footed winger has often stated that he only uses his right leg to stand up.

At halftime, Ferguson brought two changes to his line-up, replacing Possebon by Tom Cleverley, and Martin by Chris Eagles. Strengthened by their late goal in the first half, Manchester slowly took control of the match during the second period, adding three goals to their tally. Rooney scored his team's second goal at the 56th minute after a nice pass from Simpson. The striker coolly slipped the ball in between Khune's legs, humiliating the goalkeeper and his defenders. It was a great way for Rooney to get revenge after constantly getting hit by the Chiefs' defenders. Their hard tackles in the previous game had led Rooney to lose his temper and get a yellow-card, but this time Rooney got back to them by doing what does best – scoring goals. Five minutes later, the English striker, posted at the far post, headed down Simpson's cross for midfielder Cleverley who scored his first ever goal for United. His celebration told the tale as he looked like he had scored the most important goal of his career. After the goal, Fergie proceeded to three more substitutions – Vidic, Fletcher, and Carrick were out, Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson, and Paul Scholes were in. With legs getting tired up front, the manager then took out his two strikers (Giggs and Rooney) at the 66th minute, replacing them by the speedy Fraizier Campbell and Argentine pitbull Carlos Tevez. Once again, Campbell put his speed to good use, scoring United's final goal after beating the Chiefs' offside trap. The South-African team simply got outclassed by a strong Manchester side. So much so, that the Chiefs' only “real” scoring opportunity came during injury-time (the striker's shot hit the post) when all was already said and done.

In their second game of the Vodacom Challenge, Manchester United looked much more better defensively with the return of Rio Ferdinand in center defense and Michael Carrick in midfield. However, their attack led by youngsters Fraizier Campbell, Lee Martin and Chris Eagles came in fits and starts, resulting in a one-goal victory.

Regular starters Nemanja Vidic, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney were all assigned as substitutes this time around as Ferguson gave more playing time to the reserve players. Ben Foster took Tomasz Kuszczak's place in goal, Jonny Evans started in center defense alongside Ferdinand while Wes Brown and Mikael Silvestre played as fullbacks. In midfield, Carrick was partnered with Darron Gibson, Martin played left-wing and Eagles right-wing. Finally, Carlos Tevez and Campbell made up the attack

For his team's second pre-season game, Sir Alex Ferguson brought four changes to the squad that defeated Scottish club Aberdeen F.C. Polish goaltender Tomasz Kuszczak replaced Ben Amos; in defense, John O'Shea replaced Mikael Silvestre on the left flank, holding midfielder Michael Carrick had the day off and was replaced by Chris Eagles, and finally, Carlos Tevez returned in attack, replacing Lee Martin. With Carrick's absence, Ryan Giggs took up playmaking duties in the middle of the park while Egles got assigned to the left wing - Giggs' usual spot.

As a group, United played a lot better than last week but the defense looked a bit nonchalant throughout the match whereas the Chiefs defenders' made life miserable for Wayne Rooney who quickly lost his temper and often kicked his markers when the referee wasn't looking. Manchester's carelessness in defense got them into trouble at the 35th minute when Gary Neville stuck out his leg and fouled Siphiwe Tshabalala inside the box (it looked like a dive to me on the replay, but whatever). One minute later, defender Jonathan Quartey converted the penalty kick, putting the Chiefs ahead

Pre-season games are never important to the majority of fans since there's nothing at stake and players are far from their top form. However, those games are really great for people to familiarize themselves with a team, and for regular followers to know more about the reserves players of their club.

So, today, Manchester United started their pre-season calendar with a match against Sir Alex Ferguson's old club (as a manager), Aberdeen F.C. Fergie's starting eleven contained familiar names with Gary Neville, Wes Brown, Nemanja Vidic, and Mikael Silvestre in defense. The midfield was patrolled by Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs while Wayne Rooney was partnered with Lee Martin up front. Between the pipes, Sir Alex decided to go with Academy goalkeeper Ben Amos probably to give more experience to the 18-year old
