La Liga: Brazilian Star Kaka Signs With Real Madrid
June 9th 2009 16:47
Less than a week after being re-elected President of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez made the first splash of the summer by buying AC Milan midfielder Kaka.
The move reportedly cost €67.5 millions and definitely signals the start of a new era in Madrid. The Dutch brigade might be eradicated as it looks clear that either Rafael Van der Vaart or Wesley Sneijder (or both) may be gone. As for Milan, the transfer brings in much needed money that they'll probably use to infuse more youth in their aging squad.
Kaka had turned down a move to Manchester City earlier this year saying that he wished to “grow old” at Milan but it was obvious (to me anyway) that City's lack of prestige combined with their position in the standings didn't make a whole lot of sense for Kaka and his sponsors. The Brazilian surely wasn't going spend another year without playing in the Champions League. At Madrid, he's got the best of both worlds.
It will be interesting to see who Perez will target next. Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery both look like they are in Madrid's plans but Perez seems to be more interested in the French winger. It's definitely one of the numerous stories to look out for this summer.
