Late Goal Gives Real Madrid Edge Over HSV Hamburg
August 4th 2008 03:37
For the first match of the Emirates Cup, a pre-season tournament hosted by Arsenal, Real Madrid found themselves pitted against a tough opponent, German club HSV Hamburg. Both teams showed great form throughout the match with superb passing plays and several scoring chances. However, both goalkeepers were up to the task, making important saves for their team, and it took a late header by youngster Parejo for Real Madrid to take the win.
The Meringues showed their intentions very early on as Ruud Van Nistelrooy beat Hamburg's offside trap to go on a one-on-one against goalkeeper Frank Rost. The German was vigilant and easily stopped Van Nistelrooy's effort. Both teams would get several chances during the first half. Madrid were the first to score at the 24th minute with a great play originated by Arjen Robben's cross. The Dutch winger crossed the ball over to Guti on the edge of the 18-yard box, the midfielder tried to make a through-pass to Van Nistelrooy, but the ball deflected off a defender. Fortunately, Salgado had made a run inside the box; he picked up the loose ball and delivered a low cross to the Dutch striker who didn't miss his chance this time around. Despite Hamburg getting several chances – a header that went nches wide at the 17th minute, Croatian striker Ivica Olic missing a close-range opportunity at the 35th minute, and Guerrero being unable to score after beating Dudek at the 41st minute – it was Madrid who finished the first half in the lead, 1-0.
Less than ten minutes after the break, Hamburg leveled the score with a beautiful strike by substitute Mohamed Zidan. The simultaneous tackles by Salgado and Heinze didn't faze the striker at all as he fired a rocket to the top corner of the net. The rest of the half was played at a rapid pace with both teams moving up and down the field. A failed opportunity at one end often provoked a scoring chance at the other (to see what I mean keep an eye on the match clock in the video below), yet neither team could make the final ball count. Finally, it was two Madrid substitutes who combined for the winning goal at the 83rd minute – Callejon (who replaced Salgado at the 80th minute) flew down the right wing and delivered a perfect cross to Parejo (who had came in for Sneijder at the 66th minute) who headed it in. Hamburg would get one last chance before the final whistle but it's Madrid who came out on top at the end.
Real Madrid's line-up: Jerzy Dudek; Michele Salagado (Callejon, 80th), Javi Garcia, Gabriel Heinze, Miguel Torres; Wesley Sneijder (Parejo, 66th), Guti (Julio Baptista, 56th), Arjen Robben (Robinho, 73rd); Raul (Higuain, 56th), Ruud Van Nistelrooy (Javier Saviola, 56th).
