With Real Madrid going undefeated for 18 games since last December, the second edition of this season's Clasico promised to be a passionate affair as the defending champions could pull up to one point behind this year's juggernaut, Barcelona. What happened instead was a real massacre as the Blaugrana simply ran over Madrid by putting six goals past a helpless Casillas and ensure a seven-point lead over their closest rival in the race for the title.

The home team started pretty well as they exploited a shaky Eric Abidal on Barca's left flank. In the 13th minute, Sergio Ramos simply outran the defender before delivering a precise cross to Gonzalo Higuain who headed the ball past Victor Valdes for the first goal of the game. The whole play seemed slowed down as Robben and Toure collided at the edge of the box consequently breaking Puyol and Pique's focus as the defenders let Higuain slip between the two of them and take a free header near the six-yard box.

The Bernabeu went from a deliriously happy place to a quiet and gloomy stadium as Barcelona scored two quick goals just four minutes after Higuain's opener to put the score at 2-1. The reversal of situation didn't come out of nowhere as the visitors had signaled themselves in the game's first couple of minutes but were denied by Casillas' timely saves. Against Henry however, Casillas had no chance as the striker slipped the ball to the far post to make it 1-1. Just two minutes later, Henry got a free-kick near the goal line. Just as Madrid were trying to exploit Abidal's side, Barcelona turned the situation to their advantage as Henry – and sometimes Messi – slipped into the hole left by Sergio Ramos when he went to support Robben. It was during one of those occasions that Henry was fouled by Cannavaro who had to cover for his teammate. The visiting squad capitalized on that free-kick as Xavi delivered a splendid cross right on Puyol's header which crucified Casillas. Here again, the goal was caused by a defensive breakdown as Madrid's backline concentrated on the taller players and left Puyol alone.

Casillas continued his excellent work as the half went on but, apart from Robben who was great in attacking phases of the game, the players in front of him didn't seem too keen on helping him. A cheap giveaway by Lass in the 35th minute led to Messi's first goal of the game and both teams retreated to their locker room on a score of 3-1 for Barcelona.

Real Madrid gave some hope to their fans early in the second as Robben's free-kick connected with Sergio Ramos' head to make it 3-2. Unfortunately, the current Liga leaders hadn't said their final word yet. Right after the kick-off, Thierry Henry scored his second of the game to make it 4-2, and by then it was obvious that Madrid wouldn't come back. Messi added another twenty minutes later, and Pique – of all people – added insult to injury by scoring Barca's SIXTH's goal in the 83rd minute.

Madrid's incredible run came to a screeching halt last Saturday. There are still games to play to close out the season but the Clasico was THE determining game for both teams. I wouldn't be surprised to see Real struggle next week because this was definitely a hard blow to Juande Ramos' team.

Real Madrid – Almeria: 3-0
Juande Ramos seems to have found the perfect solution to strengthen his team's left side both offensively and defensively. Indeed, with the departure of Robinho, that side of the field seemed to cause problems for the Meringues as they had no reliable wingers other than Robben for the attacking side of things while Marcelo's inexperience made things dicey in defense. All of that is past now as Marcelo is slowly taking over the role of left-winger with a defensive side that betrays his left-back origin. Behind him, Heinze's experience helps to plug any hole the Brazilian might have left while Lassana Diarra's tireless running makes sure that the two men are properly covered in case of a major breakdown.

With that in mind, it was really wonderful to see Marcelo score the opener at the 23rd minute on Sunday. His shot was so powerful in a left-footed Brazilian kind of way that you would have thought that Roberto Carlos had somehow materialized on the field. The goal was only one highlight of a great game by the young player who could've had a hat trick if it wasn't for Almeria's keeper and his crossbar.

Another youngster had quite a day in the Madrid shirt – Huntelaar scored two opportunistic goals to put the game beyond doubt. His first was an unstoppable volley from inside the box after a poor clearance by the defense, and his second was an easy tap-in from a rebound given by Diego Alves. It's been awhile since I watched any Liga games but word on the street is that Huntelaar has been playing very well lately, finally proving his worth to the club. Some are even going as far as saying that there might not be a need for Van Nistelrooy next season. They found a successor.

With that win, Madrid hangs on Barcelona's heels like a stubborn piece of gum. Although their exit from the Champions League has been disgraceful, you have to admire their performance in La Liga after their hesitant start.

Real Madrid's line-up: Iker Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Pepe (Christoph Metzelder, 79th), Fabio Cannavaro, Gabriel Heinze (Miguel Torres, 83rd); Arjen Robben, Lassana Diarra (Fernando Gago, 66th), Wesley Sneijder, Marcelo; Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Raul.

Barcelona – Malaga: 6-0
It was another party at the Camp Nou as Barcelona cruised to an easy win over Malaga. Four goals in the first half alone made the conclusion inevitable. But then again, you're not gonna do much when you have less than 15% of possession which was the case for Malaga who did a lot of looking and running around without ever touching the ball. All three Blaugrana strikers (Eto'o, Messi, Henry) scored in that half while Xavi had the opener. Eto'o (with his second of the game) and Alves added two more in the first ten minutes of the second half, and then Guardiola decided to rest his two midfielders – Xavi and Iniesta – needed for international duty this coming weekend.

After the substitutions, the level of play, though still heavily dominated by Barcelona, was a lot more settled and less automatic-rifle-like. With the architect of three of their six goals gone (Xavi), the Spanish leaders couldn't quite find that perfect final pass anymore. Their perimeter passing was still excellent, but they were unable to breach Malaga's double-curtain save for some moments of Messi brilliance. Still, at 6-0 I think the crowd was satisfied enough and could leave the stadium happy.

Barcelona's line-up: Victor Valdes; Daniel Alves, Martin Caceres, Rafael Marquez, Sylvinho; Xavi Hernandez (Bojan Krkic, 66th), Yaya Toure (Seydou Keita, 25th), Andres Iniesta (Eidur Gudjohnsen, 59th); Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o, Thierry Henry.

If you follow the three “big” leagues in Europe like I do, you would know that Real Madrid have been simply stunning in La Liga as the Champions League's round of 16 drew closer. They had reduced the gap between them and Barcelona to four points (now six); an amazing feat considering the fact that Barça were 18 points ahead of the Meringues at some point. Now explain to me how the same team can get so thoroughly humiliated on the big stage against Liverpool?

Yes, Rafael Benitez seems to be a Champions League guru, always getting the Reds to the semifinals - at least - but a 4-0 beating? Were Madrid that bad or is the Premiership's “Big Four” too good for the rest of Europe? We can only speculate but unless Barcelona meets one of those teams and goes through, we must concede that “maybe” they're that good.

Madrid probably expected Liverpool to sit back and hold tight, protecting their away-goal while their opponents could try to break through. Instead, the Reds didn't give their visitors one inch of space until the score was 3-0 Liverpool. The Whites simply weren't prepared. By the third minute of play, Iker Casillas had to make two amazing saves almost back-to-back: one on Fernando Torres, the other on Javier Mascherano. Torres and Steven Gerrard were simply on fire toying with Madrid's defense as if it was child's play. And when Madrid tried to catch up to them, Ryan Babel was thrown into the mix with runs to the middle to confuse the defense even more. Torres opened the score at the 15th minute and five minutes later, Casillas was forced into another great save. As the Spaniard made save after save, Madrid had no control whatsoever on the game. Making two consecutive passes was a hassle and the pressure from Liverpool's forwards prevented them from building anything from the back.

Heinze's foul inside the penalty box at the 27th minute was the end of the game for me. The call was borderline at best. If it had happened in a Manchester United game, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't get called (the refs at Old Trafford missed much worse). But it did, and Gerrard put his team 2-0 up, 3-0 on aggregate.

Reina was finally tested at the 41st minute with surprise-shot by Sneijder but the goalkeeper reacted just in time to put the ball out for a corner. The half ended on that note, and Juande Ramos used the break to make some much needed changes.

Ramos replaced the shockingly invisible Arjen Robben by Marcelo on the left-wing, but the impact wasn't immediate as the Reds scored their third goal of the match via Gerrard one minute after the kick-off. The hosts cooled down after that, and Marcelo's presence proved to be a definite upgrade over Robben as the young Brazilian did exactly what Babel was doing on the other side of the pitch for Liverpool. Unfortunately for Madrid, Liverpool's back-four was solid and the visitors rarely ventured inside Reina's box. The introduction of Van der Vaart and Guti didn't influence the end result as Liverpool scored a fourth goal in the dying minutes of the game, twisting the knife in Real's gut.

In the end, Real Madrid were surprised by Liverpool's quick tempo and didn't react quick enough. Juande Ramos' inexperience on the European was probably a big factor in how Benitez created his gameplan, but there's no excuse for the disappearance of both Robben and Higuain who deserted their teammates when they needed them the most. Casillas has nothing to reproach himself of (why do I feel like I just murdered English grammar with that sentence?), but the rest of the team should take a long look at themselves in the mirror and figure out where it all went wrong.

Highlights video below...

Real Madrid's line-up: Iker Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Fabio Cannavaro (Rafael Van der Vaart, 63rd), Gabriel Heinze; Arjen Robben, Fernando Gago (Guti, 76th), Lassana Diarra, Wesley Sneijder; Gonzalo Higuain, Raul.

Yossi Benayoun, Liverpool

Similarly to the game opposing Manchester United and Inter Milan, the match between Liverpool and Real Madrid was a story of halves with each team dominating a part of the game.

Barcelona – Mallorca: 3-1
I'm starting to feel like a broken record here, but it was another win for Barcelona on Saturday. The Blaugrana's winning streak now extends to five as Pep Guardiola's troops keep rolling along. Unlike their previous victories, this one wasn't easy as Barcelona struggled to get the rust out of their system after the two-week break. Puyol especially looked a bit off-balance in the first half, and his absence in the center of defense (he switched positions with right-back Victor Sanchez after five minutes of play) proved devastating for the home side who conceded the first goal in the 14th minute on Mallorca's first real opportunity.

When Iker Casillas stopped Samuel Eto'o's penalty kick at the 69th minute, you could tell that the defending champions were starting to believe that they could hold off La Liga's current leaders to a draw. Although Barcelona had most of the possession during the game, they couldn't get through an overly physical Madrid side who constantly brought down Lionel Messi to his knees, forcing the Blaugrana to explore other options. When Barcelona did penetrate into Madrid's box, their shots were blocked by either Cannavaro or Metzelder who made a pretty solid tandem in center defense.

Barcelona – Valencia: 4-0
There is no stopping the steamrolling machine that is Barcelona. Without La Liga's current leading scorer in the line-up, the Blaugrana put up another impressive offensive display with a 4-0 win over Valencia including a hat-trick by Thierry Henry. The Blaugrana made their intentions clear from the first minute of the game when Xavi's shot rattled off the post after a defensive mistake in Valencia's backline. At the 19th minute, Henry scored his first of the game after a nice pass from Toure. The goal was a carbon copy of the hundreds he scored under the Arsenal shirt in the Premiership. Less than ten minutes later, he scored his second, giving Barcelona a 2-0 advantage against Valencia. The home side then added a third goal before the half via Daniel Alves.

Real Madrid – Getafe: 1-3
Things are getting worse and worse at the Bernabeu as Real Madrid put up yet another disappointing performance against a lower-tiered team. After holding Barcelona to a draw, Getafe exploited every flaw in the Madrid defense to defeat the defending champions 3-1. They first hit the net two minutes into the game, forcing the defending champions to give their all to find a way through Getafe's defense. Unfortunately for Bernd Schuster's men, they suffered a major setback in the first half when Sneijder was taken off the field in a stretcher with his second injury of the season. Rafael Van der Vaart took his place, but it was clear that Madrid simply weren't the same after the incident.

Bordeaux – Chelsea: 1-1
What is going with the Blues lately? Not only they are slowing down in the Premiership, their Champions League latest performances are leaving a lot to be desired. After convincingly defeating Bordeaux 4-0 in Matchday 1, they could only get a draw in the return match. Are they simply exhausted or are other teams figuring them out? Thanks to this draw, Bordeaux still have a chance to qualify. They'll have to defeat Roma on Matchday 6 to get through

2008-2009 La Liga Wrap-Up (Week 1-10)

November 21st 2008 23:21
After back-to-back league titles, Real Madrid started the season with hope of getting their third title in three years. Meanwhile, their archrival, Barcelona wiped the slate clean in the offseason, bringing in their own Pep Guardiola as the new manager, and getting rid of superstars Ronaldinho, Deco, and Zambrotta. After ten games, here's how the teams stack up.

1. Barcelona (10-8-1-1 | 25pts

Real Madrid – Malaga: 4-3
In a match plagued by poor refereeing (for both sides, I might add), it was the defending champions who came out on top thanks to Gonzalo Higuain's brilliant performance. Once again, their opponents took advantage of Madrid's weakness on the left side to open the score five minutes into the game. Winger Eliseu easily got past both Marcelo and Heinze before delivering a low cross into the box, but the ball surprisingly came back to him as Baha's strike hit both Sergio Ramos and the post. With Iker Casillas out of position, Eliseu only had to push the ball into the wide open net. Two minutes later, Marcelo repaired his defensive lapse by making a penetrating run in Malaga's box. His shot was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Higuain didn't miss the rebound to put the score at 1-1. Madrid had most of the possession for the next ten minutes, repeatedly testing Malaga's goalkeeper who gave several huge rebounds. At the 17th minute, Malaga took the lead once again thanks to poor marking by Madrid. At the 36th minute, the home side was rewarded a penalty which was easily converted by Higuain. Tied at 2-2, the Meringues would lose a big piece of their team before half-time when Sergio Ramos was sent off for stepping on an opposing player's chest.
